What an adventure!

Let me just start off by saying I REALLY don't like spiders so it was my faith in the author that got me to buy this book. It paid off and the book was worth every penny. Vernon is very loveable and I got over his spidery qualities quickly. Only some one with out a heart could be disgusted by his character because he has such a beautiful soul. Luckily Drake feels the same way.
The Nourisher is a really fast paced, high intensity,rip roaring, hang on to your hats, ride with a complex plot. All kinds of surprises pop up and a situation is rarely as simple as it seems. I had no idea how a romance between a spider like alien and a human was going to work but Mr. Alders' imagination has no boundaries and he makes the romance work so well it seems completely natural,like every one should have a Vernon. If you're worried about some icky bestiality scenes don't. Like I said the author uses his wonderful imagination and writes a very un-icky love story. You will have to read the story to find out how though. =)

The Nourisher (Borders of Worlds)

The concept of this book was intriguing enough to get me to purchase it, and for the most part I'm glad I did. While the relationship between Drake and Vernon did progress very quickly, it also seemed very natural. I'll admit, I was rather curious and a bit turned off at the thought of a human having a relationship with an alien that resembled a spider, but Vernon was so sweet and caring that his actual form really didn't seem to matter after a short time.
The author did a respectable job of creating this alternate reality and the various beings that people it. The descriptions of the different alien races encountered were quite descriptive without being overly wordy. It was easy to picture them as I read the story, and that, to me, is a sign of a good story teller.
While the writing style seemed rather simplistic, it was easy to read and the story flowed quite smoothly. I liked the the fact that there was actually a plot beyond the main storyline of Drake being the nourisher for Vernon's egg. I really liked Vernon and Drake, and the affection and care they showed for each other. I especially enjoyed how the author handled the inevitable confrontation between Drake and Jankin. That was a very interesting twist to the story, and one that I can see playing out more in future books. I do think the author could have done a better job of explaining what exactly the treaty was that became the main source of the problems in the secondary plotline though.
My one major pet peeve with this story was the author's insistence on using a particular phrase over and over in the book. I can't include the actual phrase in this review because the first word wouldn't be allowed. The second word is hell, which the author apparently thinks is spelled heeeell. It's apparently Drake's favorite curse for any type of situation. The words themselves didn't bother me, what annoyed me was that the author insisted on adding extra vowels to each word every time the phrase was used. Despite what the author thought and probably intended, this did not add extra emphasis or convey any added sense of distress on Drake's part, simply because the author spelled it exactly the same, every single time it was used. After the second or third time, it just came off as rote, and rather irritating. Really, there are much better ways to convey an increase in emotion than that.
I do intend to purchase the rest of the books in the series, because the author drew me into the story enough that I really want to find out Drake and Vernon's story plays out, as well as those involving the secondary characters.

My curiosity got the best of me

This book was ok, but not great. I burst out laughing when I read the description because it sounded so ridiculous- really? Alien spiders??? And I admit I was curious to see how the author would spin that to make it appealing. Vernon was an interesting character for a spider, and the author was careful to describe him in ways that minimize the spider-ness, sticking more to the emotional side of things. The writing style was distracting however, and I became fairly annoyed with the other character, the human Drake. It just felt sort of stilted, and I don't think I will read the other books in the series.
