About the Author

Dr. J. Gordon Leishman holds the Minta Martin Chair of Engineering and is a Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Maryland. A former aerodynamicist at Westland Helicopters, Dr. Leishman has written extensively on topics in helicopter aerodynamics and helicopter technology. He is also the author of the popular textbook Principles of Helicopter Aerodynamics, now in its second edition. Dr. Leishman is a Technical Fellow of the American Helicopter Society, a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, and an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He has also served as Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of the American Helicopter Society.

The Helicopter: Thinking Forward - Looking Back

This book was a pleasure to read. It presents an overview of recent rotor aerodynamic, acoustic and aeromechanical research and development and its application to the design of the overall vehicle, in simple and graphic terms that can be readily comprehended by people with little detailed knowledge of the helicopter.

Accuracy has not suffered from the simplification process - the book's author, Prof Gordon Leishman, is one of the foremost researchers and experts in the rotorcraft field. He has used this expertise to explain the technology so that its logic is readily apparent. He also provides a very useful list of easily obtained references for deeper reading.

But the book is much more than a guide to the technicalities of rotorcraft engineering, since it places the engineering and research topics into the context of the overall aircraft design and deals with how they affect the fundamentals of the vehicle's performance. The book contains a considerable amount of overall generalised performance data that gets to the core of what the helicopter is and what it offers to its customers and perhaps more important, what limits its performance and how its capabilities can be transformed by application of advances in technology.

The book does not shirk from looking at the problem of how technology comes into being and is incorporated into the vehicle, either. The author reviews the success of recent trends in applying the technology to improving the vehicle and draws some uncomfortable conclusions. He then proposes strategies for improving results.

As an engineer familiar with the field, I found this book very enjoyable and read it in one session. I discovered a few aspects of the subject that were new to me, but most important to me were the thought provoking questions on the development of the vehicle and the industry that the book raised.

This is a good book in learning about the many technical challenges that face the helicopter as an engineering system. A good amount of discussion shows the many tradeoffs and competing requirements which pose significant challenges in revolutionizing the helicopter. Attention is also given to our limited ability to understand the complex aperiodic nature of the flow, along with the complex interaction effects between the main rotor, tail rotor, and fuselage. Next, the book discusses flow control methods along with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) taking on a more active role in helicopter design and analysis. The book ends with the over-arching emphasis of setting realistic government goals that radically shifts the conventional way of thinking on how helicopters are made. If the helicopter is to have drastic performance changes, the government, academia, and industry have to team together for the benefit of all.

She is a frightened and unwilling participant in the lesson. Pip asks the Snow Petrel and the Giant Albatross if they would show her how to fly, but because they are different types of birds, their suggestions are not helpful. Finally, she soldiers on toward a successful conclusion. Deliciously cool watercolor endpapers in shades of aqua carry over into the large acrylic illustrations enhancing the text. The font is an effective size—large for Pip's announcement, "I want to fly," yet tiny when she whispers back to her parents, "I still just want to fly." Rhyming couplets vary the narrative by presenting occasional four-line poems as a song. Great Toddler book to help with swimming!!

My 2 year old daughter LOVES this book. She first started reading it in the library at just over a year old and we seemed to have taken it out for months before we finally got on axon to buy it. It was perfect as my daughter had been attending swim lessons and she loved to have fun...reading it was great...she even practiced her skills in the tub...Pip took a deep breath...flapped...kicked...swim....awesome!!!

This is a fantastic book. It is very easy to read to a toddler. The pictures are large and colorful enough to keep the attention of the child. The text is simple so that the child can understand what is being read. A book of this type may also be useful in starting a toddler to read.

About the Author
Pieter Slootweg (1950) graduated both in medicine and dentistry. Currently he is Professor of Pathology at the Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands since 2004. Before he was Professor of Oral Pathology at the University Medical Center of Utrecht since 1995. He obtained his Board Certification as Consultant Histopathologist in 1988. The mainstream of his professional career lies in the area of Head and Neck Pathology. He has published over 230 peer reviewed papers and has written, edited, or contributed to almost 20 books in this field. His research interest is in molecular biology of head and neck squamous cell cancer and its precursor stages and surgical pathology of salivary glands and maxillofacial bones.Professor Slootweg is a member of the Editorial Board of Oral Oncology, Virchows Archives, Journal of Craniomaxillofacial Surgery, International Journal of Oral Maxillofaical Surgery, Pathology Research International, and Oral Maxillofacial Surgery. Moreover, he is member of the WHO-IARC panel on oral carcinogenesis. Recently, he was appointed to be one of the Volume Editors of the update of the WHO classification of Tumours of the Head and Neck (4th edition).

Food is understandably everywhere and tied into our culture, both on a local, national and international level. This book is a collection of "micro essays", written by a group of 12 scholars, that sets out to examine many key terms or words that are prevalent in food studies as well as in our broader everyday lexicon.

Terms such as Advertising, Artisan, Brands, Celebrity Chefs, Moral Economy, Tradition and Values are all bandied about, often without much thought. Nearly every handmade bread is said to be Artisanal, for example, but does the finished product really justify the term? Does the person using the term really know what it stands for?

This is an academically focussed book, for a fairly narrow audience that could still be interesting to the more general "foodie" who likes to stretch their mind a bit and go beyond "just cooking and eating." However it is a book that is NOT friendly to those with less-than-perfect eyesight. Did everything really need to be crammed into two columns with very small text? The essays are effectively long screeds of text and this reviewer found his attention waving whilst fighting through a dense form of text that can best likened to the small text used by many newspapers in their classified ads. For a book aimed at academics, it seems an odd oversight also not to leave space for annotations and markings out.

Grumbles aside, if you are able to actually read the text you may find a number of interesting viewpoints being offered up. The essays are, to use a culinary term, bite-sized and thus easily digestible (readability notwithstanding). You are getting a lot more than a typical dictionary or encyclopaedia description, it is more a collection of thoughts that direct you, upon request, to other topics, to other reference sources and to other trains of thought. Even if you only look at one definition a day, you'll stretch out your knowledge diet but still feel quite fulfilled at the end of each reading session. Possibly with tired eyes and a slight degree of irritability (or is this just affecting this reviewer). A little more thought to the visual design would have been a Godsend here.

As you would expect, at the end of the book are pages upon pages of references and a very detailed index.

A conclusion? That is a difficult thing to achieve on many levels. Clearly if you have the professional or educational need for this sort of thing it could be a relatively inexpensive yet important reference tool, a means to inspire further thought, study or research. For the more generalist reader it still has a lot to give but you might need to manage your expectations a bit as it can be a bit of a hard slog (even more so if you have poor or middle-aged eyesight). If you decide not to buy this book, at least consider checking it out from your local library!

About the Author
Stephen L. Herman is a retired electrician and teacher with more than 30 years of experience to his credit. A seasoned author, his reader-friendly textbooks on electricity and mathematics are popular with students and instructors alike. For two decades Mr. Herman was lead instructor for the Electrical Technology Curriculum at Lee College in Baytown, Texas, where he received an Excellence in Education Award from the Halliburton Education Foundation. He also taught at Randolph Community College in Asheboro, N.C., for nine years and helped establish an electrical curriculum for Northeast Texas Community College in Mount Pleasant, Texas. Experience from the DARPA Urban Challenge provides details of the types of systems, software and processes that were used to develop the complex unmanned vehicles that participated in the DARPA Urban Challenge. The vehicle developers explain how autonomous vehicle software in this race was designed and implemented. About the Author
Herself a non-native speaker of English and the holder of a doctorate in education, Sylvia Helmer has extensive classroom experience at all levels from kindergarten to university. Teaching both mainstream subjects as well as EAL programs in North America and overseas, Sylvia has served as District EAL Consultant for the Vancouver Board of Education, and is currently involved in a new EAL learner focused pre-service teacher training program at the University of British Columbia.

Catherine Eddy has taught EAL in both secondary schools and university. At one time a consultant for the Canadian International Development Agency and an EAL Consultant for the Vancouver Board of Education, Catherine created and managed Vancouver?s District Reception and Placement Centre, whose purpose it is to welcome and work with newly arriving immigrants and their families.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was one of the required texts for one of my college ESL classes, and I have to say it was fantastic! It is well written, easy to understand, and it has very valuable information for anyone who is looking to become a teacher.
