Exciting and Fun

This third installment of the Witch series was a fun, easy read, but even though it was a quick book, it was filled with excitement and thrills. The authors did a wonderful job of filling this little book with all you would want in a story- romance, mystery, murder, thrills, horror, witchcraft, some humor and a little girl time (though I think the guys would like this one too), all with a touch of a fairy tale feel throughout. Even though I haven’t read the second book, I didn’t feel lost in this one, so you could pick this one up as a standalone and be just fine with the action and characters.

This book brings Allison to a mountain ski lodge that’s run by a creepy woman and her stepson, along with an equally creepy dining room manager. Women are disappearing and Allison wants to find out why. Along with her fellow witches, Ivy and Millicent, the three of them are ready to face a dark evil set on destroying their witch trio. The action starts from page one and goes until the final page. This is one of my favorites from these two authors for sure.

Too much missing - 2.5 stars

I’ve been reading the series back-to-back and am surprised that this third book wasn’t nearly as enjoyable as the first two. There is just too much missing. This is a highly emotional story for Allison and yet as a reader I felt none of it. So how am I to be on board with the seriousness of what she’s feeling? That end just fell flat.

Too much was left unexplained when it came to the reveal of what they were facing and what exactly happened. Very rushed, and it feels like a cop out for us to be missing out on their explanation to the police without any evidence, especially since one of the dead is an officer. That’s huge!

Allison picks up a human as a familiar when the guy begs her to take him on. It doesn’t make sense that a response of “OK” would be enough to create the relationship.

The situations are definitely interesting but there is just too much lacking—more than I mentioned here—for even fiction to be believable.

Another version of a seemingly enigmatic life

People generally speak of this bio when talking about "the good ones" on Henry Miller. I disagree. While in-depth, many facts listed are incorrect because of a lack of checking (although many checkers were used) with factual records. Dearborne's biggest angle seems to be to show that Miller was always a closet homosexual & June was a lesbian junkie. While interesting to fans of Miller, a much better written, more accurate biography is available from Robert Ferguson & I would highly recommend reading his version over Dearborne's if you were to only read one Miller bio.

A psycho-sexual biography.

This book is apparently only available through resellers, and today, the one available copy is priced at $68.

Although subtitled "A Biography," in fact, it is a psycho-sexual biography. I know the history of Henry Miller's life during the period he shared with Anais Nin quite well having read her diaries (both the highly edited and "unedited" versions) and some of her works. I never really had a good understanding of Miller's second wife June until I read this book.

If you can find this book, highly recommend picking it up. Look for it at discount book stores and public library sales.

I love your web site but I have tried a few of your recipes and they really do not work. I am not a newbie at cooking
so I know what I am doing. However not one of these recipes has turned out I've had to tweak them a bit. The binder is nice in a recipe book.

Applied Research with Word Frequency Distributions

Dawn Archer has assembled ten contributed chapters that represent current research using word frequency distributions. This method reduces text documents, such as journal articles or narrative survey responses, to lists of individual words and the frequency with which each word appears in the document. Also called a "bag of words" approach, this method has proven useful in text analysis to profile the general content of documents.

The chapters fall into three general types: Those that discuss word frequency analysis generally, those that discuss best practices, and those that present research using word frequency distributions.

Three chapters introduce word frequency analysis. Dawn Archer's "Does Frequency Really Matter?" introduces the general practice of keyword analysis and overviews the following chapters. John Kirk's "Word Frequency Use or Misuse?" covers a very basic concern--the many conflicting definitions of a "word" and how each affects word frequency analysis. Dawn Archer's closing chapter, "Promoting the Wider Use of Word Frequency and Keyword Extraction Techniques," advises researchers to make these methods more accessible and understandable to researchers in other disciplines.

Four chapters explore methods concerns in word frequency analysis. David Hoover's "Word Frequency, Statistical Stylistics and Authorship Attribution," describes innovations which use more than the traditional 100 most frequent words to establish document authorship. Mark Davies' "Word Frequency in Context: Alternative Architectures for Examining Related Words, Register Variation and Historical Change" introduces new software techniques for word frequency analysis. Christian Kay's "Issues for Historical and Regional Corpora: First Catch Your Word" recommends strategies for identifying the `same' word as its spelling varies across documents. Mike Scott's "In Search of a Bad Reference Corpus" demonstrates the robustness of identifying key words by comparing specialized and standardized "reference" documents. Finally, three chapters present research that applies word frequency analysis. Tony McEnery's "Keywords and Moral Panics: Mary Whitehouse and Media Censorship" examines linguistic indicators of public outrage and response to `offensive' behavior. Paul Baker's "'The question is, how cruel is it?' Keywords, Foxhunting and the House of Commons" uses word frequency profiles to compare arguments for and against banning fox hunting. The focus of the Dawn Archer, Jonathan Culpeper, Paul Rayson collaboration "Love - `a familiar or a devil?' An Exploration of Key Domains in Shakespeare's Comedies and Tragedies" is obvious. The researchers use a "key domain" technique to ensure that low frequency words indicating important concept categories are "counted" in their analysis.

Each of the chapters is well-referenced and a sizeable Bibliography points readers on to further enlightenment. The book is most valuable to those already familiar with word frequency analysis, but is also accessible to the determined novice. If you're a practitioner, particularly one specialising in the field of licensing, Paterson's Licensing Acts is your two-volume Bible, now in its one hundred and nineteenth edition, and as brilliant as ever for its range of detail.

For all who toil in the dense and dark vineyard of licensing, Paterson's is a venerable and indispensible work. Having been updated a hundred and nineteen times since James Paterson started it all, it stays perennially fresh, contemporary, up to date and indisputably authoritative.

Paterson's is not without its lighter moments either (thankfully), revealing, inevitably, the more than occasional insight into human failings and foibles which is always to be expected with licensing.

For example, there's the case of a Mr. Boyle -- whom we will call the hard-up Haverhill pub crawler - who was banned by the Haverhill Pub Watch from entering any of its member pubs - a ban that was extended for a further two years.

After mightily fighting the decision to ban him -- which involved a judgment 59 paragraphs long -- the ban was upheld, causing Boyle not inconsiderable grief.

`The pubs in Haverhill must be very good that Mr Boyle was prepared to spend so much money trying to get his ban lifted,' declared the judge. `Unhappily he will have to continue his drinking elsewhere, but with a lot less to spend on it.'

Thus, it covers the broad spectrum of human life and activity which is gradually revealed in this scholarly and thorough work of reference for lawyers and licensing specialists.

Incorporated in its two-volume bulk is all case law and judgments pertaining to licensing in England and Wales, with commentary... and there is nothing to beat it!

Volume I is logically structured in five parts, each part covering, with commentary, the relevant statutes, statutory instruments and forms where applicable, to include sex establishments in Part 1A preceded by:
alcohol, refreshment and entertainment licensing... door supervisors - security industry authority...street trading...appeals, civil procedure and crime (miscellaneous)... and additional material.

Similarly divided into three parts, Volume 2 covers betting, gaming and lotteries including the Gambling Act 2005.

As one would expect of a work of this stature and erudition, there are extensive tables of cases, statutes and statutory instruments and a useful and lengthy index to facilitate research. The law is stated as at 1st September 2010, `save where it has proved possible to introduce more recent developments,' say the authors, as well they might because the new government has plans for localism which could well change the content substantially from next year as the law changes policy so Paterson's will keep you as up to date in preference to any other work.

Very good walk through

I'm currently working my way through this, using it as a more direct hands-on approach to learning android as opposed to more theoretical books with many small examples. It is working out great, and things are well explained most of the times. Sometimes the author does jump from one file to another and it is expected that previously learned things like navigating to the correct file, is done without being guided to the exact location; likewise it is quickly expected that the reader knows how to create specific files, but on most occasions references are given to the previous parts of the book that deal with the relevant issues. For the price it's a steal compared to many other introductions to Android.

One con is that it is using a previous version of Eclipse and Android as a base and as such not all screenshots match how things looks in a new install, but the differences are minor and easy to figure out.

not really for beginners.

this book is a fairly good transition from beginner to intermediate, but don't buy this book if you are an absolute beginner or you will be hopelessly lost, there are things the auther left out that is very frustrating when you are trying to follow the code examples.
I typed all the code in over several days and it does not work. I tryed to put the authers code directly into eclipse and it is obsolete and will not compile, the author needs to rework and update this book, I believe it has potential, and could be a good book.

This e-book is a great walk through of basic application development. If you are familiar with java, or a similar programming language, you should have no problem following the tutorial. You will need to install the Eclipse IDE and the Android application development toolkit (ADT), and which can be daunting and isn't described in the book. Interesting history, disappointing conclusion

Wertheim manages to count an interesting story of the history of natural science. The heroes in the stories are the female scientists (and their supporting spouses and fathers) that through the ages managed to overcome the semi-religious forces that excluded them from the scientific society.
I can of course only agree with her that the situation for women in science still is far from easy. Measures should indeed be taken to encourage girls to study the sciences, to prevent teachers from (unknowingly) give more attention to boys than to girls, etc... Undoubtedly, some brilliant discoveries came to humanity centuries late (or not al all?) because only half of the thinking population was given the chance to explore the 'wonders of nature'.
It escapes me however why Wertheim thinks that female scientists would change the face (and not only the pace) of science. First she writes about how men and women have the same intellectual capabilities and how all differences between them can be traced back to different educations, and then in the final chapter she starts predicting how female particle scientists would be inclined to investigate more 'earthly' domains and how their research would serve manhood better than that of their male colleagues.
I'm afraid that particle scientists will always, male or female, be the kind of people spending billions of dollars looking for some abstract and useless 'truth'. But then again, it might not be so stupid to spend some money on research you don't expect any 'use' from. It's a proven method.

Interesting ideas, but a rushed and clumsy conclusion

I found this a very interesting book. I studied a lot of science and math in college, before turning to accounting and law, and the gender "wars" apply to those two fields as well. Wertheimer is to be congratulated on explaining the main findings in physics so simply and clearly.
However I have a few quibbles:
Why the obsession with Nobel prizes? There are heaps of science-related prizes, and from a statistical point of view, it could be that the Nobel folks' gender problems could affect their choice of other catetory winners, too.
Why do we have to justify that women should be allowed into science to "humanise" it? Women do not have to justify their participation, or lack of participation in any field. As human beings, they are entitled to participate anywhere, anytime, anyhow.
I am rather annoyed at so many people wanting to blame teachers for girls and women not taking up certain subjects. Sure, I've had my share of teachers that made mefeel good about myself and those who totally ignored me (or my 4th grade teacher who made me reread books I read in 3rd grade --no, I STILL haven't forgetten that!).
But I think that more importantly we also need to look at the support and messages children get from their family units in terms of helping them with homework , going along to parent-teacher conferences and school nights (ie giving the message that school counts), and giving girls analytical toys like jigsaw puzzles, Legos, Lincoln Logs, Mr Wizard science kits, DIY radios, etc, and watching Nova together.
I am so thankful that my parents helped me keep my sense of wonder and urged me to put my thinking cap on, even as far back(!) as the '60s, before the days of Title IX and EEO. I still wait each month for my Scientific American to come in the mail, and checked my e-mail a few months back for the latest Mars photos.
That having been said, as a CPA, I sure wish I knew how to get more girls interested in accounting as well as science. We only have 4 women at my office, and we enjoy our work so much! I would like other girls to think about finance instead of supermodelling as a career possibility. I knew when I was a girl that it was either pure science or finance for me, and I was right.

Great selection for a book club!

As a female engineer currently teaching college-level physics, I love this book! Wertheim explores 3 of my favorite topics (God, Physics, and Gender) in an immensely readable way. She persuasively sets Western Science into its cultural context, including its religious context. I found her conclusions to be careful - women can bring different perspectives into the field of physics not because of innate differences, but because in general, we have been acculturated differently.

While I have read many of the science/gender studies authors that Wertheim cites in her book (e.g. Merchant, Harding, Noble), I would compare Wertheim to an author such as Dava Sobel (Longitude; Galileo's Daughter). Like Sobel, she writes to an intelligent readership without assuming an expertise in the topic. I have given "Pythagoras' Trousers" to friends with little background in science, but an interest in gender issues (I suggested it for a book club reading). I also lent it to my mom who was drawn to the "God" part of the title. They all thoroughly enjoyed the book and learned more about the subject I teach. We were able to have some wonderful conversations.

Pretty good tabs but not complete.

Its so cool to be playing Jeff Beck songs. They sound so difficult but are not that hard at least the basic song. I'm not saying I am playing exactly like Jeff but the book gets you in the ball park and is pretty accurate for most of the songs. It is missing little bits here and there but you really have to listen to the songs and fill in whats missing. Overall I think it's worth the money. I'm having a blast with it.

Let me tell you a story... I know you've probably heard this story many times already, but it wouldn't be such a bad idea to remind ourselves and think about it once more. It's about how they train elephants in zoos... When an elephant is still a baby, it is chained to a metal ball or something similarly heavy, in order to stop it from moving around. The elephant has full freedom of movement within the allowed radius, but if it wishes to move any further, the chains stop it. In the beginning, it keeps trying to push through the "imposed limitation", but as time passes, it starts to give up. Later on, when the elephant grows up, it doesn't even try to move outside the imposed radius. Although there are no more chains stopping it - and even if there were, the animal would be too strong to be stopped by them - the same chains remain in its memory and continue to limit its movement. ***
Although the above example refers to the training of elephants, something similar happens to the fates of many humans - they allow long-imposed limitations to forever block the most precious thing they possess - A LIFE IN HARMONY WITH THEIR TRUE DESIRES! ***
