Not really a review, more of a tip.

I have wanted to read "Lolita" for years. The most useful advice I can give to someone else considering making this puchase, would be to consider buying "The Annotated Lolita." I bought a copy listed as "complete and unabridged" because i was afraid another copy would be edited. It is a controversial book after all. I didnt want to get an abridged version. There are many foreign passages in this book that went over my head. I was unable to find a website devoted to all the interpertations I needed for "Lolita." I was forced to chose between taking a break from reading to google search passages as I came across them, or to skim over them when I was too engrossed to put down the book.
Spare yourself from this hassle and just buy "The Annotated Lolita."

Think you have a problem

I choose this book to read because it was on everyone's Top Ten or Top Twenty must read books. If you are going to read this book and you don't speak or understand French, get an academically notated version. There are many French words and passages, that a lot of the book is lost. You might also want to keep an English language dictionary handy because there are so many archaic words used that even an educated person will have to look up a couple hundred of them. The book deals with obsession to the extreme. I can see why the the book was so controversial when it first came out. Pedophilia is the the only thing that is still Taboo in the American culture and as it should be. The damage done to the psyche of a person molested at an early age is a life long struggle.

Simply amazing

It should be impossible to make a book told from the vantage point of a child molester compulsively readable, but Nabokov manages to do just that. The book is not about sex (or rape, since Lolita is underage, though that does occurs in the story (never explicitly described)). It's about obsession, moral blindness, and loss, and maybe even about redemption, after a fashion. It is so spectacularly well-written that's it's mind boggling that English was Nabokov's third language. In addition, the prose is fiendishly clever, but never obscure. The book loses nothing if you don't catch any of the subtle clues and hidden meanings in the writing (I missed most of them the first time I read the book); it just gives you an opportunity to read this gem of a novel again, and get as much satisfaction out of it as you did the first time. True literary genius is hard to come by. Don't let this one slip through your fingers.

About the Author
Daniel Esparza es profesor en la Facultad de Filosofía de la Universidad de Olomouc. Licenciado en Geografía e Historia (UMA), Máster en Turismo (ULPGC) y Doctor Europeo en Ciencias Políticas (UNED), es sobre todo aficionado al deporte y al arte de montar las olas. Entre sus obras académicas se encuentran: La Historia del Surf en Málaga (2014); Identidad nacional y el Otro (2010); Introducción a la teoría literaria (2011); o Identidad nacional y Literatura (2011). Es fundador y director del primer Centro de Investigación de la Historia del Surf y del Bodyboard en Europa: OLO SURF HISTORY. Es editor del área de historia, cultura y política del deporte en la Revista Internacional de Ciencias del Deporte (Ricyde); ha publicado artículos científico-académicos en revistas internacionales sobre identidad, política, historia y deporte. En 2003 fue seleccionado para el I Curso de Periodismo Internacional de El País y desde entonces ha colaborado con diversos artículos de opinión y reportajes de investigación en diarios españoles como El País o La Provincia; en revistas como CLÍO: Revista de Historia, Staf Magazine, 3sesenta o la desaparecida Anarda; o en artículos especializados en política internacional en instituciones como el Real Instituto Elcano. About the Author

Matthew Omernick currently works as a lead artist for LucasArts Entertainment Company near San Francisco, CA. With a B.F.A from The Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL, Matt has more than seven years of industry experience as a 3D artist and animator.

Matt has also taught college-level 3D graphics for four years at Cal State Fullerton and the Academy of Art College in downtown San Francisco. He has worked for companies such as DreamWorks, Day 1 Studios, and Electronic Arts. He began his career working for various film and broadcast studios in Florida and Chicago, then branched into creating 3D art for video games. Some of Matt's credited titles include the Medal of Honor series, RTX Red Rock, and Secret Weapons Over Normandy. He is currently working on several cutting edge projects for multiple platforms.

Fills In The Gaps

I've been reading a lot of books lately that talk about how to create various 3-d art. And also lots of books that talk about programming that assumes that you already have the "art assets", but there is obviously a big gap between those two things! This book fills that gap very well.

This book talks about making art assets for games, period. So when he talks about making various pieces of art, he always puts it in the context of how it will be used in an actual game. Most of his points are illustrated with color photos of very popular games that the author has worked on (e.g. Metal of Honor).

The book offers mostly theory, but the author isn't afraid to get his hands dirty either. Every once in a while to illustrate a point he offers very detailed, step by step instructions on how to do something (mainly using Maya, 3ds Max, or Photoshop). In this regard, users who use those tools will probably get a little bit more out of the book then those who use alternate tools, but most of the book is theory and general discussion.

A lot of books I've been reading lately have been very "heavy" in terms of trying to cram so many facts into each page that I find myself counting down each page to the end of the chapter. Not this book. I find the pages turn a lot more easily and quickly in this book, and it is actually an enjoyable as well as informative read.

This is the best introduction to creating art for 3d video games

There are hundreds of books dedicated to how to create 3d art for video games. If you are a new or intermediate artist set all those other books aside and read this one. If you only pick up one book on how to model and texture for video games get this one. Most books either go into far too much detail, like reading an encyclopedia, or are too light on the important details. This book is focused like a laser beam on what is most important and doesn't detour from its goal by going off into unnecessary tangents like animation or model rigging that are subjects best covered in their own books. When you finish this book you will have a solid understanding of how to build a model and texture it and have it ready for export into a game engine. And the illustrations are gorgeous! Note that this book does cover character modeling but it primarily details environments and props.

This book has really helped to guide my texturing skills in a more technical and marketable direction. Having some experience with UV layout, this book picks up with great Photoshop tips to transform boring textures into great ones. A great book for beginners and anyone wishing to look at an industry standard pipeline.

Tolstoy is an excellent writer, I even enjoyed the 1st sentence. It continued as the story was woven. It is so enjoyable to read this, I may do this again.
