"I long to study the purely national, purely natural character of an Irishwoman." When Horatio, the son of an English lord, is banished to his father's Irish estate as punishment for his dissipated ways, he goes off in search of adventure. On the wild west coast of Connaught he finds remnants of a romantic Gaelic past--a dilapidated castle, a Catholic priest, a deposed king and the king's lovely daughter Glorvina. In this setting and among these characters Horatio learns the history, culture, and language of a country he had once scorned, but he must do so in disguise, for his own English ancestors are responsible for the ruin of the Gaelic family he comes to love.
Written after the Act of Union, The Wild Irish Girl . (1806) is a passionately nationalistic novel and a founding text in the discourse of Irish nationalism. This Kindle edition includes the 'Introductory Letters' to the novel.

'This is a worthy addition to the Pickering & Chatto series, an important critical tool that will help expand our knowledge of women's writing in the period and contribute to our understanding of the making of culture in the Romantic period.' The Wordsworth Circle

Nationalism at its finest!
By Kenton
I think this is a must read for any Irish lit fan. Published soon after the Act of Union 1800, this book really makes Ireland shine. A Englishman's journey to Ireland is confronted with a rude awakening. Everything he thought (stereotypes) about Ireland turns out to be false (well, the bad stuff anyway). Lady Morgan paints a vivid view of the green Isle, from the harsh reality (and descriptions) of the poor, to the beautiful views. I can see how after only 2yrs (i believe) it went through many editions. Must have slapped the English right in their face. While it might not be the best book you will ever read, if anything about Ireland intrigues you- this book will do wonders.

Would not recommend unless you really really love classics.

This book just wasn't for me. The only reason I finished it was for a buddy read with a friend.

English hero saves decaying Irish princess
By foggybreeze
In a strictly academic way, this book is important and useful and should be read as part of the Anglo-Irish literary canon. I did not find it to be a fascinating read however. It is extremely melodramatic with gothic overtones. The plot is fairly predictable and while Owenson is claiming 'positive' and 'cultured' qualities for the denigrated Irish, she ends up romanticizing her characters. Love and marriage are the typical solutions to deepset political differences. If only it worked that way. . .
