About the Author
Joseph M. Siracusa is Professor of Human Security and International Diplomacy and Discipline Head of Global Studies at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology where he is also a fellow in the Human Security program. A native of Chicago and long-time resident of Australia, he is internationally known for his writings on international diplomacy, nuclear weapons and the Cold War. Professor Siracusa is also a frequent political affairs commentator in the Australian media, including ABC Radio.

An Excellent Introduction to Diplomacy

Siracusa's Diplomacy: A Very Short Introduction is an invaluable introduction to the art and craft of diplomacy. The key strength of this work is its focus on diplomacy in action. It does not attempt a simple textbook outline of the role of embassies, summits, special envoys, public diplomacy, etc. etc., which can be found in existing (and much longer) textbooks in the field, but instead explores key events in diplomatic history, including the American Revolution, World War I, Stalin and Churchill's plans to divide Europe, and the ANZUS treaty, before concluding with some comments about the nature of diplomacy in the age of globalization. These case studies not only make engaging reading, but provide insight into how diplomacy takes place on the ground, and how the nature of diplomacy has been transformed since the 1700s. The chapter on the ANZUS treaty is particularly fascinating, given both the ongoing significance of the alliance and its generally overlooked nature.
Modern textbooks on diplomacy can at times dwell, rightly or wrongly, on the theory of diplomacy, as well as on the overarching diplomatic machine. I believe the real and unique value of Siracusa's slim volume is that it moves beyond the simple and oftentimes sterile discussions of diplomacy to be found in such textbooks and brings diplomacy alive. As an internationally recognized diplomatic historian, Siracusa is adept at drawing us into to the backrooms of diplomacy and revealing the myriad of colourful characters to be found there. Most importantly his work puts diplomats back at the heart of diplomacy. Anyone interested in diplomacy as it has actually been practiced would do well to start with this book.

Being a student of history is crucial for a diplomat. Knowing the history of diplomacy no less so. I am grateful for Professor Siracusa's concise yet robust consideration of the history of diplomacy, which has become an invaluable resource for my work. It is the equivalent of a bread crumb trail for broader research, and for a well structured application of diplomacy in intercultural relations. It has lost none of its relevance, despite the quick pace at which the world is changing. This little book serves up the meat of what diplomacy means under the historically new globalization paradigm.
