Some stories find you. I had read about the leper colony on Spinalonga and of the extraordinary young man who brought about the changes there, I just didn't know he would be banging down my door every night. The character of Nikos would not leave me alone so I had to give him a voice. Now, I have highly fictionalised the story. The part about the eagle is purely out of my imagination but I know Golden Eagles are in that part of the world so I thought it would make a good fit. The part about the Nazis is all based on fact. Really it is a story about the human need for order, creativity and love, and how those things can be used to overcome anything.
About the Author
Nike Azoros is a Greek Australian author. She studied journalism and creative writing and writes on themes of Hellenic culture and how origins can shape the future.

Author Flies as High as the Eagle of Spinalonga!

"The state has declared me dead, the church has buried me, my future has been murdered and death is tapping his watch at me, yet I feel so alive."
What would you do? Sent to an island of unending sickness, with almost no food, no electricity, and no means of contact with the outside world. The land is barren, and you fight against your own disease as well as the other inhabitants of the island. What would you do? Would you wither, or stand and fight?
I was so pleasantly surprised at Eagle of Spinalonga. Confused by the title at first, I realize now that Spinalonga is a Greek island... where the lepers were sent to live out the rest of their lives. This is a real island, and was used for that purpose. This piece of historical fiction has led me to a good many hours of research about the real island, and the whole thing is really fascinating.
Being a writer myself, I appreciate the great amount of work put into this book by Nike, the author. Fantastic descriptions, not over done but just enough to give the reader a shining taste of the environment. Some authors get into the habit of writing far too much description, or not enough, but Nike has managed to walk the fine line with tact. The research that has gone into leprosy, lepers, and how one with leprosy was treated at the time period... all of this research is evident, and makes the story that much more engrossing.
I have to admit to being intrigued by the very beginning of the story - I've read so many hap-hazard, ill-conceived intros, that I was startled and hungry to keep on when I read the beginning of Eagle of Spinalonga. Mysterious, harsh, and a touch morbid... exactly what readers love to start out with. It keeps us going, and Nike did a fantastic job with it.
Foreign words were integrated with finesse - if the simple guide in the beginning wasn't enough, the sentence structure was enough for readers to understand the context, and grasp the meaning of the word.
Without giving anything away, the story is fantastic. Filled with metaphor, but doesn't beat you over the head with it. The scope of it's world is desperate, but because of the main character's outlook on life, it's surprisingly calm. The situation is dire, but Nikos is the calm in the midst of chaos. He shakes the hands of those willing to steal everything from him. It's been a while since I've seen an admirable but honest character.
I've already started passing on this story to my friends. It's been such a long time since I've been truly intrigued by a bit of writing, I posted all over my Facebook wall with links to the book. At a little over $3, it won't break anybody... but it will pleasantly surprise you! Don't miss out on Eagle of Spinalonga, as I'm sure the author is going places, and this book won't stay this cheap for long!

Fantastic Book!

The Eagle of Spinalonga is a very fascinating and well-researched book. It is very unique in the fact that it uses a time old disease of leprosy as a main driving point behind the entire plot. It is amazing that the Church would declare someone dead even though they were alive and then exile them to an island to basically rot and die. I cannot even imagine what that would be like. The heartache and the sadness that the main character Nikos must have felt along with his sister must have been devastating.
The author creates such emotion from all of the characters in the book that you truly start feeling bad for the situation in which they have landed themselves in. Straight away, Nikos takes control of his fate by asking that all patrons on the boat that he has taken to Spinalonga give him their food since he is going to a land where there is none available.
I could see myself doing the same thing in that situation. I would hope that in that situation, people would want to donate towards me instead of me having to ask for it.
The courage that the main character shows is incredible. Straight from the get go, Nikos decides he wants to make Spinalonga a better island for all those who are to live the remaining portion of their life out there. I feel as though throughout the book, many characters show a surprising amount of strength and courage.
Throughout the entire book Nikos is constantly trying to improve the island of Spinalonga. It's amazing that despite being in the situation he is in, with knowing his fate, he is still trying to make everyone there more comfortable and has what they need o survive while they are still alive. One of the ways that Nikos thrives and helps the community is with his eagle hunting. The author must have spent a great deal of time researching the topic. The author forecasts the importance of the eagle in the very beginning of the story when Nikos first spots an eagle getting off the boat when he arrived at Spinalonga. The eagle plays such an important role. When Alikhan speaks to Nikos, he tells of the significance of taming an eagle and the meaning that shows. The people believe that if you have the power to master the eagle, you are a miracle worker.
Without giving too many spoilers, I just want to say that I highly recommend this book and this author. I look forward to seeing what works the author produces in the future.

Good story but needs serious editing

This is an interesting book that could be much better if edited properly. There are so many errors that it's difficult to tell what is meant at times--which is a shame, and something that could be fixed. Not only punctuation and grammar, but context and format could be improved.
The plot is fine and the characters are interesting. Even the pace is good. But please pay a professional to edit this and you will have a real book.
